EXCLUSIVE: Fox is boasting a year of solid ratings, led by the launches of several series from Accused and Animal Control to unscripted fare like Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
In the last calendar year (from September 19, 2022 to September 24, 2023), the network has averaged a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 entertainment demographic in the live+seven-day window. That’s about 14% higher than NBC, which takes the No. 2 spot.
In fact, Fox has held onto 100% of its demo ratings from the prior season across several adult demographics — the only broadcaster to do so. Those demos include Adults 18-34 (0.5 L7), Adults 25-54 (1.1 L7), Women 18-49 (0.7 L7, t-NBC), Women 18-34 (0.5 L7), Women 25-54 (1.0 L7, t-NBC), Men 18-49 (0.9 L7), Men 18-34 (0.6 L7), Men 25-54 (1.2 L7) and People 12-34 (0.5 L7).
In terms of total minutes watched, Fox is up 8% versus a year ago, tallying 119.4B minutes compared to last year’s 110.5B minutes.
While it’s not a perfect unit of measurement, reporting viewership in total minutes has become more popular recently among the broadcast networks because it does allow for a comparison between the broadcasters and streaming services, since this is the metric in which Nielsen measures streaming viewership. The streamers have notoriously kept audience data close to the chest because they are able to report viewership numbers at their own discretion, meaning that Nielsen data is often the only meaningful data available on streaming performance.
As mentioned above, Accused helped lead the way for Fox’s solid year, averaging a 0.6 L7 among Adults 18-49 and 6.9M total multi-platform viewers (which is up 184% from its live+same-day average of around 2.4M). The series premiere in January was television’s highest-rated and most-watched debut in nearly two years, since NBC’s Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Accused was also Fox’s highest-rated, most-watched and most-streamed drama debut in three years when factoring in seven days of viewing.
On the comedy front, Animal Control also proved to be fruitful for the network. Fox previously touted the premiere as the most-streamed launch in network history with 2.6M viewers across Hulu and Fox Now. It was also the watched comedy telecast since the series finale of Last Man Standing, excluding any NFL lead-ins.
Across all platforms in the L7 window, Animal Control averaged 5.2M viewers per episode, which marks a 302% lift from the L+SD audience.
Fox also continues to shine on the unscripted front. This past year, Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test ranked as the top new unscripted series of the season, posting a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo after seven days of viewing. The series also averaged an audience of 4.3M multiplatform viewers per episode.
In addition to new content, mainstays like The Masked Singer can’t be forgotten. In the seven-day window, Season 8 of the competition series received a 1.1 rating, which made it last fall’s top unscripted entertainment series.
