Christine Romans Joins NBC News As Senior Business Correspondent

As expected, Christine Romans is joining NBC News after her departure from CNN last summer.

Romans will be senior business correspondent based in New York, and will report for NBC News and MSNBC as part of the business and technology unit.

Romans exited CNN in July after 24 years, a tenure that included a sting as anchor of Early Start and as chief business correspondent. Laura Jarrett, who had been co-anchor on Early Start, left the network last year and joined NBC News.

Catherine Kim, senior vice president of NBC News Editorial, announced Romans’ hire in a memo sent to staffers today:

All –

We are pleased to announce that Christine Romans is joining the Business & Technology Unit starting today, reporting across all platforms of NBC News, including writing for digital and on MSNBC. As our senior business correspondent based in New York, Christine will cover all aspects of major breaking business news with a core emphasis on the economy – inflation, jobs, wages, debt, the Fed, manufacturing and trade, regional trends, and how it affects the daily lives of Americans across the country.

An Emmy Award-winning journalist, Christine has established a reputation for making intricate, complex financial news and economic policy accessible to the audience. Prior to joining NBC News, Christine was chief business correspondent and anchor of “Early Start” for CNN. During her 24-year tenure at CNN, she was at the forefront of covering the biggest headlines and financial stories from Wall Street to Washington for the network. She was early on the rise of cryptocurrency and the collapse of FTX and led coverage on the sudden and tumultuous impact of the pandemic on the economy and its recovery. Christine anchored coverage of the 2023 regional banking crisis, the 2008-2009 financial crisis, and the dot-com bubble and bust. Along the way, she has interviewed everyone from Bob Iger to Jamie Dimon to Dolly Parton to Martha Stewart on the subject of money, business and the economy. And she was frequently tapped to report on major world events, including the September 11 attacks and the Arab Spring.

During her spare time, Christine has written several books on personal finance and financial fluency. She is the recipient of multiple awards, including The Excellence Award for Business Reporting from The National Foundation for Women Legislators and the James W. Schwartz Award from Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism, the school’s highest honor.

She began her career as a print journalist, reporting for The Des Moines Register, Knight-Ridder Financial News and Reuters. Christine is a graduate of Iowa State University and currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and three sons.

Please join me in welcoming Christine to the NBC News family.
