Dana Carvey returned to his Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade yesterday, his first time back since the death of his 32-year-old son Dex last November.
“If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” Carvey said at the top of the show. “I just wanted to say that the amount of outpouring online and emailing and people I still haven’t been able to call back is incredible.”

The former SNL star said he had pondered his return over the holidays “and decided to come back to the podcast because I think, you know, it’s a long day when you’re not working and you get in your head, and I think it’s going to be a great break. And I think it’s really cool to laugh.”
Carvey announced shortly after the November 15 loss of his son to an accidental drug overdose that he’d be taking a break from work and social media. At the time, he wrote on Instagram that he needed “to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3. We will heal and carry on the best we can. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way.”
On yesterday’s podcast, Carvey said he appreciated offers to help but added that grief is a “private journey.”
“It’s very sweet, and people say ‘If i can do anything’ and you really can’t,” he said. “It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey. We’re all together. We do a lot of fun things. We hike, go to church. You just want to be sure that you keep moving.”
Carvey’s podcast-mate and longtime friend Spade said he himself received condolence messages to pass along to Carvey, including a letter from the mother of their late SNL castmate Chris Farley. Spade said he hadn’t yet given Carvey the letter in part because “I didn’t want to overload you.”
Carvey said he thinks humor and riffing with Spade on the podcast will help in his recovery.
“I’m kind of on the pain train,” Carvey said. “You don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better. In the meantime, all this kind of stuff is very healthy.”
