Fantasia Barrino is opening up about the challenges she faced following her win on American Idol.
The star of The Color Purple revealed in a recent interview that the years after being crowned the winner of season three of the singing competition were difficult for her financially.
“It wasn’t easy,” Barrino told People in an interview. “I lost a lot. I lost everything.”
Barrino took first place on American Idol in 2004. In 2006, her father sued her over his portrayal in her memoir titled “Life Is Not a Fairy Tale.” Barrino also survived an overdose of aspirin and sleeping aids in 2010.
The singer and actress said that her difficulties were in part due to her being “very, very green” in the industry after winning the talent show and being launched into stardom.
“You have to become a businesswoman and you link up with great business partners, but it doesn’t have a lot to do with love. It took me a long time to figure that out,” she said.
Barrino continued, “I didn’t know anything about contracts. I didn’t know anything about checking your money and making sure every day your stuff was where it was supposed to be. I just trusted and believed everybody that came into my life.”
Reflecting on her life’s journey, Barrino says those struggles were “necessary,” adding, “I’m grateful for it. … If I did not go through that, I wouldn’t be the woman that I am today.”
Barrino stars in the musical The Color Purple, directed by Blitz Bazawule, based on the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. The “I Believe” singer plays the role of Celie Harris-Johnson, the exact role she played in the Broadway musical in 2007.
