UPDATED with NFL statement: The NFL is defending its recent coverage of Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce‘s rumored romance amid criticism from football fans and even Kelce who said he believes the league is “overdoing it” and “needs to calm down a bit.”
“We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what’s happening in and around our games, as well as culturally,” the NFL said in a statement on Wednesday. “The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we’ve leaned into in real time, as it’s an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we’ve seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport.”
The statement continued: “The vast majority of our content has remained focused on the game, our players and variety of other initiatives, including our Toy Story Funday Football alt-cast, the international games and more.”
Swift’s most recent appearance at the Chiefs vs Jets game during NBC’s Sunday Night Football this past weekend drew 27M viewers — the most-watched Sunday NFL game since Super Bowl LVII.
PREVIOUS, 10:38 AM: Travis Kelce is weighing in on the coverage the NFL is giving to Taylor Swift attending the Kansas City Chiefs games.
“I think it’s fun when they show who all is at the game,” Travis said on the podcast New Heights he hosts with his brother Jason. “I think it brings a little bit more to the atmosphere, brings a little bit more to what you’re watching.”
He continued, “But at the same time, I think they’re overdoing it a little bit for sure. Especially my situation.”
The Chiefs tight end understands what the NFL is doing with the Swift coverage and added, “I think they’re just trying to have fun with it.”
Kelce’s brother Jason also gave his take saying that he thinks “the NFL is not used to celebrities coming to the games,” noting that the NBA has it down and they don’t spend too much time to covering the stars in attendance.
NBC leaned in on Swift making an appearance during Sunday Night Football this past weekend and promoted the encounter between the Chiefs and the New York Jets using a song from the superstar. At the beginning of the game, The Voice host Carson Daly made an appearance to explain the game to Swifties who don’t regularly follow the NFL.
The game ended up drawing massive numbers for the network with an increased female audience and a total of 27M viewers — the most-watched Sunday NFL game since Super Bowl LVII.
