The 24th Annual Black Reel Awards are preparing to celebrate as they revealed this year’s list of honorees for special recognition as well as a couple of industry changing announcements.

For the third year in a row, the Black Reel Awards is giving out a full slate of special honorees, awarding the Oscar Micheaux Memorial, Sidney Poitier Trailblazer, Ruby Dee Humanitarian, and its Vanguard award. The latter of which will be given in honor of another hallmark of Black excellence. Now known as the Chadwick Boseman Vanguard Award this achievement will forever immortalize both the recipient and memory of one of the most prolific actors of the African-American community.

The first Chadwick Boseman Vanguard Award recipient is actor Colman Domingo. Domingo, a two-time Black Reel Award winner, friend of the Foundation for the Advancement of African Americans in Film (FAAAF), and previous presenter at the Black Reel Awards is a once in a lifetime talent. Accomplished and well-recognized on both stage and screen, Domingo’s breakthrough film role was as an uncompromising pimp, in Zola. Domingo can most recently be seen portraying civil rights leader, Bayard Rustin, in the Netflix film Rustin and as Mister in the film re-imagining of the stage play, The Color Purple.

Because the Black Reel Awards have combined both their television and film awards into one glorious celebration, the Awards committee has created an award to recognize outstanding work in television, The Diahann Carroll Icon Award. Carroll was not just a groundbreaker in television, she was a true pioneer being the first African-American to star in a prime-time network television drama, Julia. The recipient of the inaugural Diahann Carroll Executive Award is Shonda Rhimes.

Shonda Rhimes is a producer, author and screenwriter known for her incredible run of successful television shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Station 19, Bridgerton and more. Almost single-handedly, Rhimes resurrected dramatic programming on ABC and has shown the same ability to create shows that draw attention and define moments as she moved to Netflix with her Bridgerton series. A consummate professional who never compromises her vision and integrity, Rhimes is a major power player in television production.

The Oscar Micheaux Memorial Award which recognizes the work of an industry executive will be awarded to costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Carter, a three-time Black Reel Award winner and the only African American woman to win multiple Academy Awards, has been outfitting actors and scenes for more than thirty years. She is known for her work with John Singleton and in multiple Spike Lee projects including School Daze, Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X. Her work with Marvel and Ryan Coogler in both of the Black Panther movies brought African culture and fashion to the forefront of the consciousness of the world.

The Sidney Poitier Trailblazer Award, which recognizes the work of an outstanding actor, will be awarded to Samuel L. Jackson. Often referred to as the hardest working actor in show business, Samuel L. Jackson has over two hundred acting credits, winning two Black Reel Awards after being nominated a total of ten times. Jackson is one of the most recognizable actors in the world with films grossing more than $27 billion worldwide. A veteran of stage and screen, Jackson is one of the most dependable and reliable stars for directors like Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino and received a Tony Award nomination in 2022 for his work in The Piano Lesson.

The Ruby Dee Humanitarian award will be presented to icon Sheryl Lee Ralph. Whether marching in protest, raising her voice in song or to decry the evils of the world, Sheryl Lee Ralph has never shied away from challenging the world to be a better, more caring place. Known for her award-winning portrayal of Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary, Ralph has never been confined to one stage. While her early success stemmed from her work in Dreamgirls on Broadway, advocacy for diversity has been her greatest role. Creator of The DIVA Foundation, Ralph has fought the fight for gender equality winning the TV Humanitarian Award from the Creative Coalition in 2022 and a legacy award from Project Angel for her activism in the HIV/AIDS community.

“I am pleased to salute the lifelong accomplishments of our 2024 honorees,” stated Black Reel Award founder and CEO Tim Gordon. “However, I am most proud that our organization has taken the opportunity to honor the legacy left behind by a talent that seemed to be overlooked by others, Chadwick Boseman. The inclusion of his name along with the introduction of the Diahann Carroll award gives me great joy.”

The 24th Annual Black Reel Awards will be broadcast on January 16, 2024.
