The Daily Show is currently going through a lineup of guest hosts as it continues to search for a permanent one.
Last night, the Comedy Central show debuted a new twist – two hosts behind the desk.
Correspondents Michael Kosta, who has been hosting this week, the show’s first week back since the writers strike, and Ronny Chieng joined forces on Thursday night’s show.
It marked the first time that the show had two hosts behind the desk, a strategy that has been proposed as a new format going forward.
Last year, Deadline revealed that The Daily Show was considering hosting duos and trios to replace Trevor Noah with correspondents including Desi Lydic as a potential contender.
Chieng, who has starred in movies including M3gan and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said, “Tonight, you’re getting two hosts for the price of one.”
“Are they cutting our pay checks in half?,” asked Kosta. “No, they’re just not paying you,” joked Chieng.
It was an example of the pair’s chemistry, and it worked well, adding a fresh, new twist to late-night that has been, on the whole, hosted by solo, and largely, white men for some time.

Elsewhere, there was a new face on the show.
Troy Iwata made his debut in a segment about book banning. Iwata, playing a Senior Book Fair Expert, joked that books like James and the Giant Peach should be banned because “James crawls right up inside that peach”.
It’s not entirely clear what Iwata’s role on the show is but it was a solid introduction.
Iwata has starred in series such as Apple’s WeCrashed, alongside Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway, and Netflix’s Dash & Lily and has also featured in shows such as NBC’s New Amsterdam and The CW’s Katy Keene.
Up next week is Desus Nice making his return to late-night after the end of his Showtime series Desus & Mero. Other guest hosts include Charlamagne tha God, whose own Comedy Central series was recently canceled and Michelle Wolf as well as the return of Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman.
Comedy Central and its ultimate boss Chris McCarthy have been figuring out who will land the permanent role since Noah left last year.
The shortlist is thought to include Chelsea Handler and Leslie Jones, while Deadline and other trades have previously reported that Hasan Minhaj was in the running for the role before that New Yorker article scuppered his chances. That’s not news, whatever other publications tell you.
