Gerry Turner was no doubt warned that starring as the first Golden Bachelor on ABC would come with its own set of challenges. But he couldn’t have expected it to be so damn frightening at the same time.
On Thursday’s second episode of The Golden Bachelor, Gerry, 72, was on his very first one-on-one date when the headlights of his convertible malfunctioned on the freeway drive from Malibu to Sun Valley. Ironically, Gerry had just shared his thoughts about the first date by saying “I’m a bit scared. it’s been so long and I’m sort of out of practice. There’s many things that could go right and a lot of things that could go wrong.”
Next thing you know, Gerry is announcing to his date Theresa, 69, that “my headlights aren’t working” while they putter down the slow lane of a Los Angeles freeway.
“Believe me, I’m not a California driver,” Gerry says in the voiceover. “I live in Northern Indiana. This is the first time driving on a California freeway and they are notoriously insane. I don’t have any headlights in front of me. I don’t see highway markings. I don’t see all the signs because they are dark.”
“My hope is that this is the worst part of this date,” Theresa adds separately, “because right now I’m scared to death.”
When the duo finally got off the freeway in Sun Valley, they both acknowledge the “stressful” car trip. But it helped when Theresa put her hand on Gerry’s shoulder because he “instantly felt calm.” Aww!
Their date at Cadillac Jacks Cafe ends up being a sentimental one as they both chat about losing their longtime spouses. It ends with an awkward flash mob dance in the parking lot.
After a group date, a special birthday surprise party for Gerry and the revelation that Leslie, 64, of Minnesota has hearing aids just like the Golden Bachelor, the women are once again assembled for the dreaded rose ceremony. Going home this week are Jeanie, the 65-year-old retired project manager from Tennessee; Natascha, the 60-year-old pro-aging coach and midlife speaker from New York; and Peggy, the 69-year-old dental hygienist from Connecticut.
Gerry cried after giving away the last rose.
